Midwifery and Womens Health

Julia Sanders has combined teaching, research and midwifery practice for over 25 years and has extensive experience in the design and delivery of complex research studies into maternity care. Her current methodologies include randomised trials and the use of routine health data to answer research questions. Julia is currently leading the UKs largest study comparing outcomes for mothers and babies following waterbirth and birth on land and has an interest in developing further work around maternal weight gain in pregnancy.

Midwifery

Sarah Chitongo is a Nurse and Midwife with 16 years of experience in all areas of Midwifery. She is also an experienced Senior Manager who left the National Health Service (NHS) as a Deputy Head of Midwifery. She has set up a High Dependency Unit (HDU) on a delivery suite. The aim of the HDU was to offer women and their families a consistently high level of individual, medical, and psychological care, delivered by staff who understood the physiology, pathology, psychological and cultural needs of BME obstetric groups and the wider community. There was initial anxiety on the part of midwives around the mechanization of care, but competence and confidence was developed through an informal structure that she developed. She is an ambitious manager who has built a reputation developing and motivating staff. The management style focuses on three main things; innovation, quality and staff. She has excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire confidence and build strong stakeholder relationships to ensure that the curriculum is at the forefront of knowledge and reflects the latest research insights and materials. Further roles within current position include generating and presenting annual management review reports as well as providing consultancy for academics within the department in relation to midwifery education.

Midwifery

Elinor Jenkins has started her Midwifery career at Isle of Wight in 1999. She moved to New Zealand to work on a case loading midwifery post for three years in 2003. On her return to UK in 2007, she joined Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, where she worked for eight years as a Staff Midwife. During this time, she became Supervisor of Midwives and Research Midwife. In 2016, she has completed her Clinical Doctorate. In 2015, she took the combined post of Clinical Lead for Research and Research Manager at Isle of Wight for two years. In 2017, she returned to Clinical Midwifery and began Postdoctoral development as a Clinical Researcher. Her research into labial suturing began in 2010, when she realised that there was a significant lack of evidence for this type of genital trauma and women were not receiving evidence based care. She conducted an audit of labial suturing in 2011 and went on to gain funding for further research in 2017.

Soheyl Asadsangabi has completed her DNP as a Midwife at Vanderbilt University. She has been practicing midwifery since 2004 in private and academic settings. As a woman from another culture and a clinician who provides care for a diverse population, her focus is on cross cultural women’s health care. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt School of Medicine.

Loredana Zordan is an Acupuncturist and a Midwife. She is teaching nationally and internationally by conducting workshop for midwives on the use of acupressure for pregnancy and birth. Since the introduction of the workshop in Italy “Acupressure for pregnancy and birth” many hospitals are introducing acupressure to facilitate labor induction and pain relieve in labor. This allows midwives to expand their role, becoming more complete and independent practitioner, acupressure being drug free and therefore not having harmful teratogenic effect, provides a much safer and satisfying childbirth experience as well as facilitating a more natural and less medicalized childbirth.

Faezeh Safari is a Senior Midwife at Kings College London-Guys and St. Thomas Hospital, NHS Trust, London since 2003. She is currently practicing as a Community and Birth Centre Midwife. She has completed her BSc in Midwifery at Survey University in Iran in 1999. She has completed her MSc in Advancing Womens Health Care at Kings College London University which led her to research and publication on womens experience of de-infibulation in the UK. She is a Member of the Royal College of Midwifery in the United Kingdom. She also worked as a Research Midwife in the Department of Maternal and Fetal Research Unit at Kings College London. She is a strong advocate of midwives and natural childbirth. She is a mentor and sign off mentor for clinical practice of student midwives.

Bente Dahl is an Associate Professor of Midwifery at the University College of Southeast Norway. She has more than 15 years of clinical experience in Nursing, Midwifery and Professional Development. Her research and teaching interests have focused on issues concerned with midwifery and women’s reproductive health as well as qualitative methodology. Her Doctoral degree on the topic “Queer Challenges in Maternity Care” describes lesbian couples’ maternity care experiences, and was carried out at the University of Bergen Norway.

Serena Koh has received her PhD in Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, from the School of Nursing, University of Melbourne, Australia in 2008. She is currently working as Associate Professor and Programme Director (Academic - Undergraduate Programme) at Alice Lee Centre of Nursing Studies, National University of Singapore and teaching undergraduates and postgraduates on research, evidence-based practice, maternal and child health, patient safety and quality as well as supervision of the students for their research thesis. She worked in the Ministry of Health from 2009-2016, developing patient safety strategies and overseeing clinical quality in the hospitals. She previously worked in KKH as a Midwife since 1995, and extended to research and teaching roles since 2001. Her research interests are in inter-professional education, patient safety and women’s health.

Stefania Andrascikova has completed her Graduation in Nursing at the Faculty of arts, Comenius University in Bratislava- Slovakia in 1988. In 1998, she completed Bachelor degree in Midwifery; Master’s degree in Public Health in 2002 and; PhD degree and received her Habilitation in Nursing in 2009. Since 2004, she works in Faculty of Healthcare of Prešov University as a Teacher in the Department of Midwifery and held the position as Vice Dean for Education. She guarantees the subjects of Midwifery, Public Health, and Applied Psychology for Nursing and Midwifery study programmes. She worked as a Teacher for 20 years and Supervisor for the clinical practice in faculty´s hospital in Presov. She is member of committee for professional projects especially for e-learning education and other fields in health care professions in thematic areas - new technologies, methods and forms in health care education in the national cultural and educational grant agency. She is member of committee for young doctors and researchers in Presov University and member of committee for accreditation of study programmes in Nursing and Midwifery in the Ministry of Health Slovak Republic. She was participated in professional mobility in Israel, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal, Malta and Czech Republic. She has published three monographies and several articles in Slovak and foreign journals and she is main investigator of educational projects especially in midwifery e-learning.

Barbara is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). She received her RN degree from Vermont College, Bachelor of Science from SUNY Purchase, and Master of Science from Philadelphia University. After practicing midwifery in homes, in birth centers and in hospital settings, Barbara brings a special sense of the universality of birth to her practice. Her recent work centers on supporting teens' and menopausal women's health, where she brings her knowledge and experience to women's relationships with food, their bodies and their gynecological health throughout their lives.

She is a Director Of Operations My Body My Baby Enhanced Prenatal Education Project at Modern Maternity and Midwifery systems. Irene Chain Kalinowski (1956) was born in Rotherham,South Yorkshire England, to Polish immigrant parents, grew up and trained as a Midwife in Rotherham, South Yorkshire,England and has practiced midwifery through three continents, Europe, the Middle East, and New Zealand. For thirty four years she has practiced midwifery.A journey that has taken her through countries where women have faith in childbirth and through countries where birth is medicalised and where women are fearful of it. To that of Her first book, "The Heart and Soul of Midwifery" Tells a story of how childbirth became so complex and how we need to make changes in the way we provide maternity services. How women need to to take charge of their experience and how we need to understand the normal physiological process of childbirth. She shares real life experiences and takes you into the heart and soul of childbirth. This is a valuable insight into complexities the way we provide care. A great resource for those providing maternity services and for those who wish to understand how care should be individualised. Her Second Book "My Body My Baby" released in March 2013, Inspired by her nieces traumatic childbirth experience and the alarming C Section rates. She cares deeply for women giving birth and no woman should be traumatised from her birthing experience.

Hannah is the Founder of Ask The Midwife Limited and a Registered Midwife. Since becoming a Midwife, she has worked in a number of roles including Research, Caseload Midwifery, and Patient Experience & Social Media, heading up services for users such as a Young Parent's Facebook Group. She is a a Midwife, she has grown more passionate about improving health outcomes for mothers and babies. She advocates for women to stand up for their rights and their access to informed choice. Hannah has also been a morale booster in the NHS, and has given a number of talks on using social media as a portal for peer-peer support for Midwives, and trying to integrate social media into healthcare, winning an Award in 2014 for patient carer and public engagement.Hannah is now a successful entrepreneur, having built Ask the Midwife, the UK’s first ever health advice app, run by registered midwives.

Narjes Shiraghaei Kootenaei is a freelance speaker and trainer and head of Mazandaran Midwifery association, IRAN since 2015. Her work is based on “Evidence Based Midwifery” and her book ""Is it safe in pregnancy?"" is the first in the field in Persian language, has been praised both by midwives and moms. For her, sex education and family planning are two pillars of a healthy society and although in Iran both topics are sensitive and in most cases forbidden, she managed to start and successfully continue her informative and frontier workshops on these topics for the last 5 years. It's never been easy, neither the government nor the society in general is keen to openly talk about these issues. She didn't stop on teaching the midwives and colleagues on these topics. She managed to convenience school's deans and parents of teenagers to agree to sex education and since 5 years ago she regularly has sexual health workshops at 5 schools. Also she has a strong presence on online platforms especially on Telegram (the leading social media platform in Iran) for sex education.
